A storm Monday night sparked a fire at a condo that ended up displacing 25 residents and causing $500,000 in loss and damage.

BEL AIR, MD — A fire broke out at a three-story 12-unit condominium building Monday night that's being blamed on a lightning strike. Officials credit a working fire alarm and sprinkler system for helping contain the fire to the attic above unit K.

The fire broke out around 7:30 p.m. June 30 at the Taylor Ridge Condos located at 1307 Sheridan Place in Bel Air. The person living in unit K heard lightning strike the roof of the building. Minutes later, the resident saw smoke coming from his ceiling. He called 911 and activated the building's fire alarm system, reported the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company.

Approximately 30 firefighters arrived on the scene and discovered a fire above the unit and were able to contain it to the immediate attic area. They were able to gain control of the fire in about 15 minutes. Significant water damage affected several units, displacing those residents. The water and fire sprinkler systems were turned off, and a fire watch was put in place until further notice, the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office stated Monday night.
