Recycled Gallon Jugs Used To Create Roundabout In Harford County
Construction has wrapped up on a roundabout in Bel Air that used recycled plastic gallon jugs.

BEL AIR, MD — Crews have completed the installation of a single-lane, modular roundabout designed to improve traffic safety at the county’s top crash location - the intersection of Bel Air South Parkway and Blue Spruce Drive.
The roundabout project in Harford County happens to be among the first of its kind in Maryland as it was made from recyclable plastic. Each square foot of roundabout reuses more than 100 one-gallon milk jugs. For this project, the equivalent of about 370,000 milk jugs were reused, the county stated.
Compared to a concrete roundabout, the modular roundabout project saved $1.5 million.

It also was completed a couple of days ahead of schedule and all roads reopened Thursday afternoon.
“This new modular roundabout is an important traffic safety improvement at the county’s most dangerous intersection,” Harford County County Executive Bob Cassily said. “I would like to thank everyone for their patience during the road closures and give special thanks to the DPW Highway Engineering team and our dedicated DPW crews for working so quickly to complete this project ahead of the busy holiday season.”
