Updated: Two Killed In Early Morning Crash on I-95

(Updated 11:37 a.m.)—Road rage may have contributed to a two-car accident on Interstate 95 in Abingdon early Saturday morning that left two people dead, state police said.

According to Maryland State Police, the crash happened shortly after 2 a.m. when a Lexus that had been parked on the right shoulder near the Route 24 exit quickly merged back into traffic and into the far left lane.

Police say the driver of the Lexus, Veney B. Tanner Jr. of Abingdon, had been in a dispute with the occupants of a Jeep that had stopped suddenly on the highway. Witnesses told police both vehicles pulled to the shoulder, and someone in the Jeep banged on the Lexus' windows.

After crossing the lanes of I-95, Tanner's Lexus was struck from behind by a box-truck.

Off-duty state police Cpl. Kevin Watkins came upon the crash shortly after it happened and pulled the three occupants out of the Lexus, which was on fire, and attempted CPR on Tanner. 

Tanner, 31, and Janelle E. Jackson, 17, of Baltimore were both flown by helicopter to area hospitals, where they were later pronounced dead, according to Maryland State Police.

The third occupant of the Lexus, 38-year-old Myron Doram of Randallstown, and the box truck's driver, Clinton T. Griffin, 63, of Newark, DE, were taken by ambulance to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. 

Watkins was treated for smoke inhalation at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center and released, according to police.

All northbound lanes of I-95 were closed until around 7:30 a.m.

State police are still looking for the driver and occupants of the Jeep involved in the incident. Anyone with information is asked to call 410-537-1150.
