Another Major Storm Forecast For MD: Here's When, What We Can Expect This Time

There is no break for Marylanders from the stormy weather. Two more storms are forecast for the state, and one may bring some snow.

MARYLAND — Maryland's active weather pattern will continue into next week, with more rain and flooding possible, followed by a chance of snow.

After Tuesday's storm dumped 2 to 4 inches of rain, which triggered numerous flood warnings across the state, residents should be on the lookout for another rainstorm Friday night. And then there is a chance of a snow at the end of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, though that is very much up in the air currently.

On Thursday afternoon, the National Weather Service issued a flood watch from 6 p.m. on Friday to 6 a.m. on Saturday in Anne Arundel, Cecil, Howard, Montgomery, Charles, Baltimore, Harford, Prince George's counties.

Rainfall amounts around three quarters of an inch to an inch and a half are most likely, with localized amounts around 2 inches possible, the NWS said. Most of the rain will fall in a three- to six-hour period Friday evening.

"The locally heavy rain combined with already saturated soil may cause excess runoff leading to flooding of streams and creeks as well as potential flooding in urban and low-lying areas," the NWS said.

A wind advisory is also in effect from 7 p.m. on Friday to 5 a.m. on Saturday in Anne Arundel, St. Mary's and Calvert counties. South to southeast winds of 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph, are expected in the areas.

Tree limbs could be blown down, and a few power outages may result, according to the NWS.

A coastal flood watch is in effect for the shoreline in Anne Arundel County from late Friday night through Saturday morning, where there is an increasing threat of tidal flooding, the NWS said. Also, isolated instances of wind damage and flooding from rain are possible late Friday afternoon into Saturday, according to forecasters.

The watches come after heavy rain, strong winds and flooding slammed parts of Maryland, including downtown Annapolis, Baltimore, Havre de Grace and parts of Baltimore County, on Tuesday.

The storm closed roadways, caused nearly 35,000 power outages and disrupted school schedules. More than 2.5 inches of rain fell on BWI Airport Tuesday, according to the NWS. Weather observer volunteers recorded over 3 inches of rain in much of Harford County, some parts of Anne Arundel County and northern Baltimore County, with more than 4 inches recorded in Abingdon and Long Green, the Baltimore Sun reported.

For Friday night, rains and wind gusts will return to Maryland, mainly after 4 p.m. Later Friday night, thunderstorms are possible in the Baltimore area and elsewhere in Maryland, with wind gusts as high as 44 mph. New rainfall amounts are expected to total between a half and three quarters of an inch, the NWS said.

"Another low-pressure system approaches on Friday, bringing potential impacts similar to the recent system, including Western Maryland snow or mix, heavy rainfall with possible flooding, and strong wind gusts," WJZ News reported Thursday. "Rain will start Friday afternoon toward the evening rush hour becoming widespread by the evening."

Rains will likely end before 7 a.m. on Saturday. Winds will remain strong on Saturday, with a west wind of 16 to 26 mph and gusts as high as 40 mph.

With colder air moving into the region, there will be a chance for snow showers in Maryland on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, lasting into Tuesday morning. "Specifics are still sketchy, but some accumulation will be possible if the forecast remains as we see it now," forecasters at WJZ News said.
