Chef Jose Andres Closes Spanish Diner: Reports

BETHESDA, MD — Celebrity chief and philanthropist José Andrés is closing Spanish Diner on Bethesda Row Wednesday, Feb. 5, according to multiple media reports.

The restaurant's website did not mention that location as of noon Tuesday, and only showed a location operating in New York City's Hudson Yards; that location has also closed and is will be renovated as Oyamel, The MoCo Show reported.

The Montgomery County restaurant opened in spring 2021 at 7271 Woodmont Ave., which had previously been the site of Jaleo.

The Maryland restaurant was modeled after the original Spanish Diner in New York City, which was a tribute to Andres' native country. The Bethesda location similarly featured shared plates known as Pica Pica, and a selection of Spanish cocktails, beer, and wine.

A statement from the company to Bethesda Todaysaid, “We are deeply thankful to the community for embracing our passion for authentic Spanish cuisine and creating unforgettable memories with us,” the statement said.

Andres continues to operate restaurants across the country, including Jaleo in Washington, D.C., Las Vegas and Disney Springs; Minibar in DC; The Bazaar in DC, Chicago, New York and other sites; Zaytinya in DC and other cities; and Oyamel Cucina in DC.
