Cybersecurity Leader Mimecast Acquires Bethesda Startup

Email and data security company, Mimecast Limited, announced they have acquired a Bethesda-based cyber security training startup.

BETHESDA, MD — A leading email and data security company called Mimecast Limited announced Tuesday they have acquired the Bethesda-based cyber security training startup Ataata, Inc.

"The acquisition will allow customers to measure cyber risk training effectiveness by converting behavior observations into actionable risk metrics for security professionals," a statement from Mimecast Limited says.

The 20-person team of Ataata is based in Bethesda and started in 2016. The company is a cyber security training and awareness platform that reduces human error in the workplace and helps prevent a breach.

Mimecast Limited, with U.S. headquarters in Lexington, Mass., focuses on securing email. The company sells a cloud-based email platform that offers protection from hacking to about 30,000 companies worldwide.

The acquisition will offer customers a cloud platform that is engineered to mitigate risk and reduce employee security mistakes by calculating employee security risk based on sentiment and behavior. It will also connect employees with relevant training that is content based on their score and recommended areas for improvement, the statement says.

"The powerful combination of Mimecast’s cyber resilience for email capabilities paired with Ataata’s employee training and risk scoring will help customers enhance their cyber resilience efforts," the statement says.
