In August, Elrich was declared the winner of the Democratic primary for county executive over challenger David Blair by a mere 32 votes. The primary election was even closer than in 2018 when Elrich defeated Blair by fewer than 80 votes in the Democratic primary.

After winning the primary, Elrich was considered the heavy favorite in the general election, given the county's strong Democratic leanings.

Elrich was first elected as Montgomery County executive in November 2018. He previously served three terms on the Montgomery County Council as an at-large member, being first elected in 2006. He served as a councilmember on the Takoma Park City Council from 1987 to 2006.

Election officials will tally provisional ballots on Nov. 16. Mail-in ballots will be counted as they arrive until Nov. 18. Local boards cannot certify their results before Nov. 18.
