Harris Teeter Confirms Plans to Open on Wisconsin Avenue

A Harris Teeter spokeswoman says the grocery chain has signed a lease for a space in the mixed-use development planned for 8300 Wisconsin Ave.

Grocery chain Harris Teeter has finalized a lease for a space in a new mixed-use development project at 8300 Wisconsin Ave., according to a company spokeswoman.

Developers StonebridgeCarras are planning a nine-story, mixed-use residential and commercial building at the 1.6-acre site at the corner of Wisconsin Avenue and Battery Lane, formerly the Trillium property.

Developers have said the project will include a partially below-grade grocery store with an entrance planned for a plaza at the corner of Battery and Wisconsin avenues, but Stonebridge principal Jane Mahaffie would not confirm that the grocery tenant is Harris Teeter.

"StonebridgeCarras is not prepared to announce anything related to 8300 Wisconsin," Mahaffie wrote in an email to Patch.

Harris Teeter has long been rumored to be the grocery tenant. Harris Teeter spokeswoman Danna Jones confirmed that the chain has executed a lease, but didn't have further details.

The North Carolina-based chain operates 200 supermarkets in eight southeastern states and the District of Columbia, according to a Hoovers company profile.

Many of the stores feature sushi bars, gourmet delis, cafes and pharmacies, and the company is ramping up its presence in the competitive Maryland, Northern Virginia and Washington, DC region, according to the profile.

Nearby locations include Park Potomac and North Bethesda.

About 300-375 units are planned for the development—all rentals—ranging from efficiencies to three-bedroom apartments, Stonebridge representatives have said. Two-level townhomes are planned along Wisconsin Avenue. The building is planned to be nine stories at its height, but will slope to seven stories on the property’s northern edge.

A rooftop pool and a green roof are additional features of the site.
