Univ. Of Maryland Assistant Football Coach Arrested On DUI Charge In Florida

A University of Maryland assistant football coach was arrested for DUI in the Tampa Bay area over the weekend, according to reports.

BETHESDA, MD — A University of Maryland assistant football coach was arrested for driving under the influence in the Tampa Bay area over the weekend, according to reports.

Kevin Sumlin, 59, of Bethesda was arrested early Saturday morning by police at a gas station in Hillsborough County, according to WFLA News Channel 8. The assistant coach, who refused a breathalyzer test, was then released from jail on a $500 bond, WFLA reported.

Sumlin is in his first year at Maryland, serving as associate head coach and co-offensive coordinator. He previously was a head football coach at the University of Houston, Texas A&M, and the University of Arizona.

Most recently, Sumlin served one year as head coach and general manager of the Houston Gamblers of the United States Football League before getting hired by Maryland in February.

“My relationship with Kevin goes back over 25 years. He has a tremendous football mind, along with a proven track record of developing players and winning at the highest levels," Maryland head football coach Mike Locksley says on the team's website. "I’m excited to welcome him and his family to College Park.”

Sumlin's arrest took place during the team's bye week.

“Maryland Athletics is aware of the incident this past weekend involving football coach Kevin Sumlin,” the team said in a statement, according to The Diamondback, the school's student newspaper. “As this is an ongoing investigation, we will have no further comment.”

Sumlin pleaded not guilty, and the DUI charge carries a maximum sentence of six months in prison, according to The Diamondback.
