BETHESDA, MD — Montgomery County recorded 402 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, down from 451 cases a day earlier, state public health data showed.

Tuesday's addition pushes the total number of recorded infections since the pandemic began to 36,851.

In the past 24 hours, three more people have died from the virus. That brings the local death toll to 949.

The latest fatality count does not include the 44 others whose deaths were linked to the virus, but never confirmed by a lab test. For now, they are considered "probable deaths."

The county — which is home to roughly 1 million residents — continues to have the highest number of deaths in the state. It also has the second highest number of confirmed cases, after Prince George's County, which has 44,894, according to the latest figures.

Statewide, there have been 219,961 cases, 4,755 confirmed deaths, and 161 "probable deaths." Of the 1,653 people currently being hospitalized, 396 are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
