Silvestre, Yang Poised To Win MOCO Board Of Education Races
Montgomery County voters went to the polls on Tuesday to decide four seats on the county Board of Education.
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD — Montgomery County voters went to the polls on Tuesday to pick who would fill the District 1, District 3, District 5 and an at-large seat on the school board for Maryland’s largest school district.
By 10 a.m. on Wednesday, with all 258 precincts reporting, incumbent Karla Silvestre had a total of 113,253 votes (65.62 percent) compared to Mike Erickson's 57,690 vote total (33.43 percent) for the at-large Board of Education seat.
Julie Yang received 118,394 votes (66.80 percent) in her race against incumbent Scott Joftus, who attracted 57,390 votes (32.38 percent), for the Board of Education District 3 seat.

Grace Rivera Oven received 98,548 votes (56.91 percent) in the District 1 race against Esther Wells, who received 73,167 votes (42.25 percent).
In the closest of the four Board of Education races, incumbent Brenda Wolf received 84,818 votes (50.01 percent) in her District 5 race against Valerie Coll, who received 83,178 votes (49.05 percent).

The Montgomery County Board of Education includes five members who are required to reside in a district, two at-large members who can reside anywhere in the county and one student member. The five district members, like the at-large members, are elected county-wide.
For the election, officials will tally provisional ballots on Nov. 16. Mail-in ballots will be counted as they arrive until Nov. 18. Local boards cannot certify their results before Nov. 18.
