MARYLAND — Democratic Sen. Chris Van Hollen is out of the hospital after suffering a stroke a week ago.

"It’s great to be back home after a long week," he tweeted Sunday. "I’m grateful for the generous outpouring of support from everyone and the dedicated care I received from the team at GW."

The 63-year-old, who is seeking a second term in office, was admitted to George Washington University Hospital on May 15 after experiencing lightheadedness and acute neck pain while delivering a speech in western Maryland.

An angiogram showed that he had experienced a minor stroke in the form of a small venous tear at the back of his head.

Van Hollen said he is expected to make a full recovery and return to the U.S. Senate.

He was first elected to the Senate in November 2016 after serving seven terms in the U.S. House.
