Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued For 17 MD Counties: NWS

Most of Maryland is under a severe thunderstorm watch Monday, with large hail and damaging winds seen as the main threats, the NWS said.

MARYLAND — Most of Maryland is under a severe thunderstorm watch Monday until 10 p.m., with large hail and damaging winds seen as the main threats, the National Weather Service said.

Seventeen counties, plus the city of Baltimore, are under the watch. They are: Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Calvert, Caroline, Charles, Dorchester, Harford, Howard, Kent, Montgomery, Prince George's, Queen Anne's, Somerset, St. Marys, Talbot, Wicomico and Worcester counties.

In the Baltimore-Washington region, showers and thunderstorms are likely between 2 p.m. and before 8 p.m. on Monday, with the possibility of large hail, damage winds and frequent lightning, according to the NWS forecast. Otherwise, the day will be mostly sunny, with a high near 91 in the Baltimore area.

"Damaging winds will cause some trees and large branches to fall," the forecast said. "This could injure those outdoors, as well as damage homes and vehicles. Roadways may become blocked by downed trees. Localized power outages are possible. Unsecured light objects may become projectiles."

A hazardous weather outlook is also issued for the Maryland portion of the Chesapeake Bay, Tidal Potomac River, and I-95 corridor through central Maryland, northern Virginia, and District of Columbia.

Monday Night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 9pm. Some storms could be severe, with large hail, damaging winds, and frequent lightning. Mostly clear, with a low around 54. Northwest wind 6 to 9 mph becoming north after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Tuesday: Sunny, with a high near 74. North wind around 6 mph becoming south in the afternoon.

Tuesday Night: A chance of showers after 3am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 55. Southeast wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Wednesday: Showers likely, mainly after 9am. Cloudy, with a high near 66. East wind 5 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Wednesday Night: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Low around 56. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Thursday: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 9am, then a chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 71. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

Thursday Night: A chance of showers before 9pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 53. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Friday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 73.

Friday Night: A chance of showers after 9pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 55. Chance of precipitation is 40%.
