Sobriety Checkpoint Results Released By Montgomery County Police
Three people were arrested for driving while impaired during a Sept. 2 sobriety checkpoint in Montgomery County, according to police.
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD — Three people were arrested for driving while impaired during a Sept. 2 sobriety checkpoint in Montgomery County, according to police.
Nearly 510 vehicles were stopped at the checkpoint on Columbia Pike and Dustin Road in Burtonsville, the Montgomery County Police Department said.
Prior to the Sept. 2 checkpoint, the Montgomery County Police Department alerted residents that it would conducting the checkpoint sometime starting around 10 a.m., but it did not disclose the location in advance. That night, police also focused on enforcing impaired driving laws.

A week earlier, an Aug. 25 sobriety checkpoint on northbound Georgia Avenue at Weller Road in Wheaton resulted in the arrest of five people for driving while impaired, police said. During that sobriety checkpoint, Montgomery County police stopped about 372 vehicles.
A similar sobriety checkpoint on Aug. 18 on northbound Frederick Road at Game Preserve Road in Gaithersburg led to the arrest of four people, police said. That night, 565 vehicles were stopped at the Gaithersburg checkpoint, according to police.

The Supreme Court has found that temporary DUI checkpoint stops do not violate the Fourth Amendment rights of drivers, although several states (not Maryland) have statutes that prohibit sobriety checkpoints.
