It’s been a hot summer and I am so thankful for tree canopies. The other week, I walked to the Farmer’s Market to buy fresh produce. The parking lot, where the market was held, was steaming hot and felt 10 degrees hotter than my tree lined walk to the market. Those large mature trees provided a respite from the sun.
This summer has made me appreciate Maryland’s initiative to plant 5 million native trees over a ten year period starting in 2021, with 10% of the trees planted in urban underserved areas. 479,000 trees have already been planted.
I have included the link- https://news.maryland.gov/dnr/2023/06/01/five-million-trees-please-maryland-rolls-out-5-million-trees-initiative/. Explore this if you would like to read more about the tree planting initiative, if you are interested in volunteering, or if you would like to have trees planted in your area. Tree planting also addresses the issue of climate change by cooling communities, and by absorbing atmospheric carbon.
