NSA Bethesda Partially Reopens Gate 3, Still High MD 355 Traffic

Tensions in the Middle East caused officials to tighten security, closing two gates to the base, later to partially reopen one.

BETHESDA, MD — Following a heightened state of security in the wake of the killing of an Iranian general, Naval Support Activity Bethesda is restricting access to multiple gates, potentially causing heavy traffic in other areas.

Base security initially closed gates three and four, but later announced gate three will remain partially open. Still, the restricted access to gate three, and closure of gate four, will boost traffic at the remaining open gates and the roadways surrounding them, namely MD 355

The order to close gates came down on Saturday, Jan. 4, in the days following the killing of Iranian Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani.
