Wonderland Books Event for New Book from Dr. Stixrud and Ned Johnson
Co-authors of the national bestseller The Self-Driven Child will be discussing their new book on Tuesday, April 1st at 7:00 pm.
On Tuesday, April 1st at 7:00 pm, Dr. William Stixrud and Ned Johnson, co-authors of the national bestseller The Self-Driven Child and What Do You Say? will be at Bethesda's newest bookstore Wonderland Books (7920 Norfolk Avenue) speaking about and signing copies of their new book The Seven Principles for Raising a Self-Driven Child: A Workbook. In their many years of working with kids, teens and families, Dr. Stixrud and Mr. Johnson have grounded their work in science and advised parents to “Put connection first,” and “Be a consultant, not a boss or manager.” They will explain how these and their other five principles will help parents build relationships with their kids and give them the freedom to trust more and worry less. Co-author Ned Johnson explains that they authored their book with busy parents in mind: "Parents are overwhelmed and stretched in a million different directions. We designed the book so that a busy parent does not need to read and study it cover to cover but can instead flip to the pertinent section and find practical and actionable advice." Seven Principles is filled with the tools parents need to help them connect with their kids, become a non-anxious presence in their families, and implement effective practices for raising happy, emotionally resilient, and self-motivated children and teens. The book also includes a chapter for educators. "We know how hard teachers are working and recognize the importance of the relationship and connection between home and school," says Dr. Stixrud. "We want to help educators think about how they can use these principles in the classroom and reduce their own stress."
For years, Dr. Bill Stixrud and Ned Johnson have been on the front lines of the burgeoning youth mental health crisis. Though their work has been translated into multiple languages and they have worked around the globe, they are both local to the Bethesda area. Dr. Stixrud, a nationally renowned clinical neuropsychologist, is the founder of The Stixrud Group, based in Silver Spring. Ned Johnson is the founder of Bethesda-based Prepmatters, a large and highly respected tutoring company where he has taught and motivated thousands of students and coached their families. He is an active CollegeTracks board member, assisting and empowering Montgomery County students from first-generation-to-college, low-income and immigrant families. "We have been fortunate to see our work adopted in homes, schools and workplaces around the world but we are so grateful to have gotten our start here," shares Mr. Johnson.
