BOWIE, MD — The lighting of a 9-foot-tall menorah on the fourth night of Hanukkah will bring together residents to celebrate the eight-day Jewish festival of lights.

Hanukkah this year starts Sunday, Dec. 14, and continues through Monday, Dec. 22. It's celebrated with a nightly menorah lighting, special prayers and fried foods. The Hebrew word Hanukkah means “dedication,” and is named as such because it celebrates the rededication of the Holy Temple, according to Chabad of Bowie.

The special event Chanukah in Bowie will take place Dec. 17 starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Bowie Senior Center located at 14900 Health Center Drive. This will be the second year for the special event, which is hosted by Chabad of Bowie.

"It's very well attended. Last year, a crowd of over 50 people of all ages gathered," Rabbi Eli Baron told Patch. "It's very rewarding and heartwarming to see."

During the event, there will be a juggling act and Hanukkah music played outside in addition to the lighting of the menorah, then indoors will be children's crafts, hot food available and donuts and latkes served.
