BOWIE, MD — Independence Day falls on a Friday in 2025, kicking off a star-spangled three-day weekend packed with fireworks, festivals and other Fourth of July fun in and around Bowie and Prince George's County.

To help you fit it all in on your 4th of July calendar, Patch has put together a guide to what’s going on in Bowie and the surrounding areas.

The 6th Annual Bladensburg Fireworks Celebration at Bladensburg Waterfront Park on July 2 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. DJ Flava will spin high-energy beats, there will be food trucks, pony rides, family-friendly activities and a fireworks finale.

The 2025 Laurel Independence Day Celebration will be July 5 at Granville Gude Park starting at 3 p.m. with a parade. There will be field events, music, food and fun from 3 to 6 p.m. and a variety of vendors at the park from 3 to 9 p.m. Fireworks will be held starting at 9 p.m.

Six Flags America presents the Coca-Cola July 4th Fest with three nights of fireworks July 4, 5 and 6.
Fireworks will take place at 9:30 p.m. each night. Get your groove on and capture the moment at the Coca-Cola “Sounds of Summer” zone, powered by Coke Studio, featuring a live DJ and interactive photo booth.

Following the July 4 and July 5 home games for the Chesapeake Baysox, there will be a fireworks show. The kids park will have inflatables and a carousel for preschool and elementary school aged kids. On Friday, there is a picnic option or a package in the Club Level. Saturday, the first 1,000 fans age 13+ will receive a Colton Cowser bobblehead. Sunday is Family Fun Day with a free patriotic headband with a mullet attached to it for the first 750 fans. All fans will have the chance to run bases after the game and the kids park will be open from noon to 12:30 p.m.

Independence Day commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776. In that document, the 13 original colonies declared their independence from Great Britain.

During the pivotal summer of 1776, the pre-Revolutionary celebrations honoring King George III’s birthday were replaced with mock funerals as a symbolic break from the crown.

It was an exciting time in Philadelphia — the Continental Congress voted to break from the crown and, two days later on July 4, the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the original 13 colonies —New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland. Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia — to adopt the Declaration of Independence.

The first annual commemoration of the nation’s independence was in Philadelphia on July 4, 1777, while the Revolutionary War was ongoing. Fireworks have been part of Fourth of July festivities since the first celebration in Philadelphia.

Today, Americans celebrate with fireworks, parades, concerts, and family gatherings and barbecues. Celebrations, though, predate by centuries the designation of Independence Day as a federal holiday, which didn’t happen until 1941.
