Kenhill Drive Upgrades Cause Temporary Delays
The lane widening project is designed to reduce overall traffic congestion at the Bowie intersection.
Traffic has been moving a little slower on Kenhill Drive in Bowie this week as the road undergoes an upgrade designed to reduce congestion.
The city has undertaken a project to lengthen the left turn lane on Kenhill Drive at the intersection of Rt. 197by a couple if hundred feet. The project started on Monday.
That intersection is a busy one, according to Bowie's Public Works Director James Henrikson, and traffic backups there are long-standing problem.
"Thousands of people go out there every day and they get backed up with the lanes not being extended far back enough from the intersection," he said.
Residents, like those living in the K section, need to turn left at this intersection in order to get on Rt. 50 east or west.
The work is being performed by the city, but the Maryland State Highway Administration Is footing approximately half of the $32,000 bill.
Workers poured the concrete for The lane widening on Tuesday. After the concrete has cured, workers will put down asphalt overlay.
Henrikson estimates that the work will be completed by Monday, but possibly as early as Friday.
