Bowie Police Officer Fires Gun While Approaching Stalled Vehicle, Placed On Leave
A Bowie police officer fired a gun while walking up to a stalled vehicle and has been placed on leave during an investigation.
BOWIE, MD — Thursday morning, the Bowie Police Department released a statement about an incident involving a police officer and a shooting.
On Sept. 12 around 8 a.m., an unnamed Bowie police officer pulled his vehicle over to help what was believed to be a stranded driver on northbound Collington Road (MD 197) and eastbound John Hanson Highway(US 50). While walking up to the vehicle, the police officer discharged its firearm, hitting a vehicle that was passing by, the police department stated.
An investigation has been launched to discover why the gun was discharged. The officer has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. No other information has been released by the police department.

“It’s fortunate that no one was injured in this incident. We remain committed to serving the residents of this community,” Chief Dwayne A. Preston said in a statement released Thursday.
