Olympic Pep Rally Hosted For Prince George's Athletes

PG County residents will celebrate Kevin Durant, Jerami Grant and Frances Tiafoe with a pep rally on Friday ahead of the Tokyo Olympics.

PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, MD — As Prince George’s County prepares to watch three hometown greats, the county will celebrate the start of the Olympic Games with a pep rally on Friday.

Residents, families and supporters will honor Prince George's County's very own Kevin Durant, Jerami Grant and Frances Tiafoe at Friday's Olympic pep rally.

The event will take place Friday at 4 p.m. at the Junior Tennis Champions Center in College Park. The pep rally will feature food, music and prizes.

Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks will attend the pep rally along with:

  • Wanda Durant, mother of Kevin Durant
  • Ray Benton, CEO of Junior Tennis Champions Center
  • Former NFL player Kyle Arrington
  • More prominent athletes in the area

While Prince George’s County is sending three athletes to the Olympics, the state of Maryland has 15 total athletes participating in this year’s sporting games.

Maryland's athletes will be competing in Olympic gymnastics, men’s basketball, rugby, swimming, tennis, track and field and wrestling.

Maryland athletes have a track record for bringing home the gold in the Olympic Games. In the 2016 Rio Olympics, 11 of the 18 U.S. gold medals came from Maryland natives.

As the state hopes their athletes will bring home some more gold, the Tokyo Olympic Games begin July 23. Durant and Grant will play for Team USA basketball while Tiafoe will play for Team USA tennis.

The basketball tournament lasts from from July 25 to Aug. 1 with the elimination stage running from Aug. 3-7.

The tennis competition will begin July 24 and conclude on Aug. 1.

The Olympics will be broadcast on NBC with additional coverage on NBCOlympics.com and the NBC Sports app.
