Pedestrian Struck, Killed In Capitol Heights: Police

The man was walking in the roadway when he was hit, police say.

CAPITOL HEIGHTS, MD -- Police are trying to determine why a man was walking in the roadway when he was fatally struck by a vehicle Wednesday night in Capitol Heights.

Police were called to the area of Central Avenue and Hampton Park Boulevard at around 8:30 p.m. due to a collision involving a pedestrian, who was suffering from critical injuries when police arrived, according to a report from the Prince George's County Police Department. Akil Nesby, 39, of D.C. was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

"The preliminary investigation reveals the involved SUV was traveling eastbound on Central Avenue toward Hampton Park Boulevard in the left lane," the report states. "The victim was walking on Central Avenue in a vehicle travel lane when he was struck. Investigators are working to determine why he was in the roadway. The involved driver remained on the scene."
