Weekend Traffic Expected in Bowie

SHA warns drivers to expect delays as they complete the ramp resurfacing project at Rt. 50/Rt. 301.

Ramp resurfacing the Rt. 50/Rt. 301 interchange in Bowie is scheduled to continue this weekend, and residents should expect some traffic delays, according to the Maryland State Highway Association.

SHA will close the ramp from westbound Rt. 50 to southbound Rt. 301 starting at 9 p.m Friday, according to a press release. The ramp will be reopened to traffic by 5 a.m. on Monday, just in time for rush hour traffic, and to give the new concrete overlay sufficient time to dry. 

Drivers on westbound Rt. 50 should drive past the Rt.50/Rt.301 interchange and follow the detour signs around the work to gain access southbound Rt. 301.

Work is expected on this interchange for at least the next two weekends, SHA said. SHA anticipates resurfacing will completed this weekend.

SHA has been working on this resurfacing project for several weeks. The $1.8 million project involves applying “whitetopping,” a bonded concrete overlay, to the ramp. Whitetopping is a sustainable overlay, and improves breaking and makes for a smoother ride, according to SHA.

More than 100,000 cars make use of the Rt.50/Rt. 301 interchange everyday, according to SHA.
