A Potomac High School student has been charged for bringing a gun to school and assaulting an officer, causing a school lockdown.

OXON HILL, MD — A Potomac High School student has been charged for bringing a gun to school and assaulting an officer, causing a school lockdown, Tuesday.

Xavier Matthews, 17, of the 2000 block of Iverson Street in Temple Hills is charged with assault and for carrying a handgun on school property. He's being held on a $5,000 bond and is being charged as an adult, police said.

The school was put on lockdown Tuesday morning for nearly an hour by school officials after a school resource officer (SRO) was notified by a teacher that a trespasser was inside the building at around 9:25 a.m., police said.

The officer was notified that a former student met a current student—identified as Matthews—on school grounds. When the officer questioned Matthews, a gun was seized by police and Matthews was taken into custody, police said. Matthews is accused of assaulting a Prince George's County police officer during the interview.

"Out of an abundance of caution, school placed on lockdown by school officials," police tweeted.
