Catonsville Y Starts First Phase of Expansion

Upgrades come as the Y starts process to redevelop some of its land.

If you haven't been to the Catonsville Y recently, you've missed seeing the first phase of renovations that are under way on the South Rolling Road property.

Here is what is happening:

  • Upgrades have been made to the indoor pool, including a deck and 14  windows. The filtration system is also now a salt-water system, which means the chlorine is in the air instead of the water. The pool renovations were completed at the end of October.
  • Renovations are under way in all locker rooms, including adding ceiling tiles, lights, lockers and stalls.
  • The concrete slab has been laid for the 4,300-square-foot addition, which will include space for a workout room and a fitness classroom. The  addition is expected to be complete in February or March.
  • Once the addition is complete, renovations will continue in the current workout room where an expanded child care area will be completed.

All of this comes as the Y of Central Maryland is starting the redevelopment of 5.5 acres for an independent living facility operated by South Rolling Road neighbor .

The Y will hold a meeting Thursday night at the Arbutus Library at 7 p.m. to get feedback on the proposal. The Y scrapped plans to build a medical building on the property after opposition from residents over the potential for more traffic.

Brightview Senior Living is a division of the private development company, the Shelter Group. It currently has another assisted living building at 912 South Rolling Road; just south of the Catonsville Y.

The Y will sell the same portion of the land that it had planned to develop for the medical building, which is 5.5 acres. The facility is expected to be larger than the Brightview building on South Rolling Road and larger than the proposed medical building, but it will have far fewer parking spaces.
