Updated: County Council Approves PUD for Catonsville Y

Approval of the planned unit development is the next step in building a seniors residential facility.

(UPDATED) The Baltimore County Council voted Monday night 7-0 to approve the PUD bill for the redevelopment Catonsville Y.

With the vote approved, the Y can move forward with the deal to sell 5.5 acres of land to Brightview Senior Living for a three-story residential independent living facility.

The sale of the land will help finance the expansion and redevelopment of the Y, which is already underway. Upgrades to the Y facility include a new deck and filtration system for the pool, renovated locker rooms and a larger workout area.

County Councilman Tom Quirk introduced the bill to approve the PUD at tonight's meeting.

The PUD is a separate development process for which  developers in Baltimore County can apply if they can demonstrate a community benefit that will be derived from the project. Projects that go through the PUD process are also exempt for some typical zoning requirements.

The council reviewed plans for the building at a recent council work session, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Brightview Senior Living is a division of the private development company, the Shelter Group. It currently has another assisted living building at 912 South Rolling Road, just south of the Catonsville Y.

The plan has met with little opposition from the community compared to a previous PUD, which called for a larger medical building for Saint Agnes Hospital physicians on the Y campus. about the greater number of parking spaces and the impact to traffic on South Rolling Road.
