Man Rescued After Falling 30 Feet Down Well In Catonsville

Authorities said the man was trapped in the well for nearly 24 hours before he was rescued Wednesday.

CATONSVILLE, MD — A man was rescued Wednesday after falling 30 feet into an unused well in Catonsville, according to authorities and a report.

Numerous units responded shortly after 2 p.m. to a home on Old Frederick Road near Rockwell Avenue, according to the Arbutus Volunteer Fire Department. Crews on scene reported the man fell into the well after the ground covering it collapsed.

The man fell into the well on Tuesday and spent nearly 24 hours inside it before he was rescued, Baltimore County Fire Department bureau chief Travis Francis told WBAL-TV. He was found when a neighbor heard his cries for help.

"I was going to get my dogs in from the backyard, and I heard some dude calling for help, so I didn't know what to do. I went downstairs, grabbed my dad and we went in the backyard to see if we could hear anything," Wesley Straffin told 11 News.

Straffin and his father found the man, called 911 and gave him water, the report said. The man told officials he had no idea a well was there.

Following the rescue, the man was taken to Shock Trauma for treatment of back and shoulder pain.
