MD Man Drowns In NY Lake While Boating With Family: Police

The 19-year-old from Catonsville drowned after he jumped into the lake and was unable to swim back to the boat, authorities said.

STEUBEN COUNTY, NY — A Catonsville man died after authorities said he drowned while boating with family on a New York lake.

According to a news release from the Steuben County Sheriff's Office in New York, deputies were called to Keuka Lake in Urbana shortly after 1:40 p.m. Friday after receiving a call about a person drowning.

According to authorities, 19-year-old Ahmed Ayaz and his family were boating on the lake when Ayaz jumped into the water to swim. Police said Ayaz, who wasn't wearing a life jacket, could not swim back to the boat and disappeared underwater.

Rescue crews located and recovered Ayaz's body after a 10-hour search involving multiple agencies, according to a WROC report citing Hammondsport Fire Chief Bill Fries.

Authorities said Ayaz and his family were visiting from Maryland when the drowning occurred.

"Our hearts go out to the Ayaz family and our thoughts and prayers are for their recovery from this tragedy," Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard said in a statement.
