CATONSVILLE, MD — A student was shot and wounded at Catonsville High School after dismissal Tuesday afternoon, according to officials.

The 16-year-old boy was being treated at an area trauma center for injuries not believed to be life-threatening, the Baltimore County Police Department reported Tuesday night.

The shooting occurred in a parking lot behind the school on Bloomsbury Avenue, police said.

A school resource officer at Catonsville High School reported the shooting around 3 p.m., which was 45 minutes after dismissal, according to authorities.

The victim was shot in the shoulder as after-school activities were going on, according to WJZ, which reported the track team hid in a shed and lacrosse players thought the noise was fireworks.

Some members of the lacrosse team told WBAL they heard gunshots and saw a vehicle speed away from the scene.

Baltimore County Police Chief Melissa Hyatt pledged to make an arrest in the case.

"It's just going to take some time," Hyatt said, according to a report by WBAL.

Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olzewski Jr. said that he was "devastated" by the news.

"As County Executive and the father of a BCPS student, I am devastated by this act of senseless violence at Catonsville High School," Olszewski said in a statement. "We refuse to allow this to be normalized."

He vowed to ensure the police department "has every tool to bring the perpetrator to justice" and said the county would continue partnering with Baltimore County Public Schools to ensure students and educators have support.


Initial report: A shooting was reported outside Catonsville High School Tuesday afternoon, according to the Baltimore County Police Department.

Officers were investigating after 3:30 p.m.

Someone was shot in the shoulder in the parking lot behind the high school around 3 p.m., according to WJZ, which reported the school was briefly placed on lockdown.

Parents can be reunited with their children by going into the main entrance of Catonsville High School, where students can be picked up at the front door, police reported after 4 p.m.

Media members were staging off Bloomsbury Avenue near the tennis courts, police said.
