Longfields Teacher Wins Big on 'Wheel of Fortune'

Fifth-grade teacher in Prince George's County won almost $24K on the game show.

Lee Hawkins of Longfields Elementary in Forrestville was stumped in the bonus round on “Wheel of Fortune,” but came home with a hefty consolation prize: $23,800.

The fifth-grade social studies and science teacher told The Washington Post she was randomly chosen to audition for the show after attending a Wheelmobile event at a Virginia shopping center. Her appearance on the show aired Sept. 18.

Hawkins advanced to the bonus round after successfully guessing the phrase “Blue Ribbon Winner” on the letterboard, but couldn’t puzzle out “Iconic Fame” from the “a” and “m” revealed.

Over 55 students, teachers, and community members showed up in support of Hawkins at a viewing party hosted by Longfields Elementary.

The school’s principal, Maisha Strong, used the viewing as an opportunity for education, according to The Sentinel. “See how it’s important to read every night?” Strong asked the students. “Or else, you won’t be able to solve the puzzle.”

If it’s up to her, this won’t be the last of Hawkins’ gameshow experiences. The teacher admitted to The Post that “[she’s] really ‘The Price is Right’ lady. You might see me there next.”
