Trader Joe's Will Open Its Doors This Year In Prince George's County

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — A Trader Joe's will open in College Park yet this year, the grocer confirmed this week. This will be the first Prince George's County location for Trader Joe's and comes on the heels of a Wegmans Food Market and a Whole Foods Market opening in the county.

The new store will be on the first floor of the Aster at 4429 Calvert Road.

The University of Maryland and the Terrapin Development Company were instrumental in helping bring the grocer to the county, along with County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, Councilmember Dannielle Glaros, Mayor Patrick Wojahn and a partnership with Bozzuto, Willard Retail and JP Morgan. It took years of negotiations to reach this point.

“Partnership makes it possible and we are grateful to city, county and university leadership who have joined forces with Bozzuto to champion this effort every step of the way,” said Ken Ulman, president of TDC and chief strategy officer for economic development at the University of Maryland. “We are eager for Trader Joe’s to open its doors to Maryland students, faculty and staff and our College Park neighbors, as we drive even more economic growth in the region.”

Alsobrooks trumpeted the accomplishment at a state of the economy address she gave this week.

“We are all excited to have this new grocery option in Prince George’s County,” she said to cheers from the audience. “This has been a long time coming and a tremendous amount of work was required to make this happen.”

“We are delighted that Trader Joe’s will anchor a dynamic retail experience at Aster College Park, giving our residents and the community an extraordinary place to gather,” added Toby Bozzuto, president and chief executive officer of the Bozzuto Group. “Along with our partners, we are so excited to build upon all of the incredible growth taking place in and around College Park.”
