Earthquake Rattles MD: Did You Feel It?
A magnitude 2.5 earthquake rattled parts of Maryland Monday afternoon. The USGS said the quake was centered in Howard County.
RIVERSIDE, MD — A magnitude 2.5 earthquake rattled parts of Maryland Monday afternoon. The USGS said the quake was centered in Howard County, and no damage or injuries have been reported to date.
County officials posted shortly before 6 p.m.: "We have confirmed that a 2.5 magnitude earthquake has occurred in Howard County in the Columbia/Savage area per the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Police and Fire are aware of the situation and are surveying for any potential damage. Please only call 911 in the event of an emergency."
The earthquake happened about 7.7 kilometers underground, the USGS said.

The Howard County Police Department said on X: "That shaking/rattling you felt around 5:17 p.m.? It was a small earthquake, according to @USGS_Quakes. No reports of damage or injuries at this point."
The strongest earthquake ever recorded in Maryland was a 5.8-magnitude earthquake in the early afternoon of Aug. 23, 2011, sending people fleeing from their office buildings across the region wondering if a terrorist attack or something else had happened.

That earthquake, which lasted just under a minute, caused cracks in the foundations of homes.
