Fire Ignites Inside Chimney, Spreads To Home

A Columbia home caught on fire after a blaze began in the chimney then spread to the house, officials said.

COLUMBIA, MD — A fire broke out Sunday afternoon in a chimney that spread to the Howard County home.

Howard County firefighters were called to the home located in the 9500 block of Ridgeview Drive around 2:30 p.m.

Firefighters first on the scene discovered a fire in the chimney that had extended into the house. The fire was quickly brought under control, according to the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescues Services.

No injuries were reported, the fire department stated.

"Chilly weather is here. Chimneys should be cleaned and inspected by a licensed professional every year before use. Creosote buildup and other blockages can cause chimney fires. Use dry wood and keep fires small to reduce buildup," the fire department posted on Facebook.
