What the most popular dog and cat names for 2024 in Maryland? Check out the list for top monikers in the state and nationwide.
MARYLAND — Call for Luna in the Baltimore region and it’s anyone’s guess if a dog or cat will come running. Luna is the top name for female dogs and female cats, according to a new report from Rover, an online marketplace for pet care products.
In Maryland, the top five dog names for 2024 are, respectively, Luna, Bella, Lucy, Max and Charlie.
The top five cat names for 2024 are, respectively, Luna, Oliver, Charlie, Frankie and Mochi.

These cat and dog names have jumped up most in popularity this year. They showcase what’s gaining traction in the region:
- #1 Trending Dog Name: Cash (up 927%)
- #1 Trending Cat Name: Binx (up 926%)
And local Baltimore foodies take note: Sage is up 177% and Mochi is up 109%.

Sports fans are representing this year. Raven is up 89% as a top pet name.
Nationally, the top 10 names for female dogs are Luna, Bella, Daisy, Lucy, Lily, Lola, Zoe, Sadie, Coco and Bailey. There’s a fair amount of crossover in the top names for female cats: Luna, Lily, Bella Lucy, Callie, Nala, Kitty, Willow, Cleo and Daisy.
Top names for male dogs are Charlie, Max, Milo, Cooper, Buddy, Teddy, Rocky, Bear, Leo and Duke. There’s some overlap in the top names for male cats, which are Milo, Oliver, Leo, Charlie, Loki, Max, Simba, Jack, Ollie and Jasper.
In addition to the traditional names in the Top 10 for female and male cats and dogs, names referencing pop culture, sports. Entertainment and even the grocery store surged in 2024. Some of the names were Bluey, which surged 58 percent for dogs and 122 percent for cats, claiming the No. 1 trending name for both species.
“The pet names we choose are a look into our latest cultural obsessions and our sources of joy,” Nicole Ellis, a certified professional trainer and Rover Pet People panelist, said in a news release. “This year’s report reads like the magazines we used to love flipping through — the names are equal parts tabloid-worthy and total comfort food.”
The top celebrity names for female dogs are Taylor Swift, Jisso, Jane Fonda, Normani, Renee (Rapp), Brat, Beyoncé and Sabrina. Eilish and Dua Lipa are trending as well.
The top celebrity names for cats are Styles, Taylor Swift, Ivana, Halsey, Gaga, Cardi B and Elon. New to the mix this year are Eilish, Justin Timberlake, and Kelly Clarkson.
Provolone was the top food-inspired name for cats, with a 509 percent surge. Other food-inspired names that are trending include Casserole, Babybel, Burger, Burrito, Sorbet, Twinkie and Meringue.
Pet names also were inspired by TV shows and movies, famed fashion houses and social media trends, the report said.
