Man Shot After Breaking Into Couple's Columbia Home, Injuring Them During Assault

An intruder who broke into a couple's Columbia home and assaulted them was shot by one of the residents, according to police.

COLUMBIA, MD — A couple reported to Howard County Police that a suspect forced its way into their Columbia home and assaulted them. One of the residents grabbed a handgun and shot the intruder in the leg.

The incident happened Nov. 2 shortly after 7 p.m. at the couple's home in the 5000 block of Dry Well Court, according to Howard County Police. The suspect ran off, police said, and the victims called police who were able to locate the suspect shortly thereafter. Police described the couple as "elderly."

The couple received "significant" injuries but they weren't considered life-threatening. The resident who shot the intruder likely will not be charged in the incident, the police department stated.

Police arrested Benjamin Sungjin, 42, of Columbia, and charged him with home invasion and first- and second-degree assault.
