Sidewalk Reconstruction Project Affecting Traffic To Start This Summer In Howard County
A sidewalk reconstruction project long eastbound Montgomery Road in Elkridge could affect traffic. It will start June 15.
HOWARD COUNTY, MD — Starting June 15, a sidewalk extension project along eastbound Montgomery Road from Rowanberry Drive to Timberlee Road in Elkridge could affect the flow of traffic. It's the first part of the county’s pedestrian plan, WalkHoward: Moving Forward, to increase access to amenities along the US 1 corridor.
Currently, the southside sidewalk ends just east of Rowanberry Drive. This project will close the gap with an Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant walking route to the next existing sidewalk on Timberlee Road. The project also will include the installation of a mid-block crossing on Montgomery Road just west of Steepridge Drive with the new sidewalk continuing east along the northside of Montgomery Road, past Green Valley Place to Timberlee Road.
The project has been designed to create a safe connection for multi-family residences south of Montgomery Road to Elkridge Elementary School and Elkridge Landing Middle School, expanding those walk zones and providing safe access to recreational features on school property.

The project also will include the installation of a new storm water management feature on the former site of a deteriorated house at 7126 Montgomery Road, which was purchased by the county and then demolished in the spring of 2020. Weather permitting, the entire project should be completed by the start of the 2023-2024 school year.
During construction hours, which will be weekdays 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., flagging operations will be in place to direct traffic as needed, as temporary lane shifts can be expected throughout the project, especially when the mid-block crossing is constructed. Signs will be posted in the area to alert drivers and people of the work.
