Spotify Blocked On Students' Laptops Effective Immediately: HCPSS

Howard County school leaders said that as of Friday, Spotify will no longer be accessible on student Chromebooks or through their network.

HOWARD COUNTY, MD — Starting Feb. 14, Howard County Public School System students can no longer access Spotify on the instructional student network and on student Chromebooks.

The school district stated that this sudden change stems from parents concerns about students having access to Spotify, a music and podcasting service that includes songs with explicit content.

"Staff determined that service is not integral to the HCPSS instructional program and that alternative means of providing students access to music are available," the school district stated.

Considering other music platforms remain accessible from the HCPSS instructional network and student Chromebooks, HCPSS leaders will continue to review these types of sites to determine appropriateness and any instructional implications for blocking access for students, the district stated.

Additional information regarding updates to student device access and online safety can be found online.
