Student Response Contest Kicks Off Yom HaShoah Commemoration

The theme "Survival, Liberation and Renewal" marks the 80th anniversary of the Liberation. A student response contest will be included.

HOWARD COUNTY, MD — The annual Yom HaShoah Commemoration (Holocaust Remembrance Day) will be April 23 at Temple Isaiah in Fulton. Leading up to the event will be a student response contest.

This year’s theme “Survival, Liberation and Renewal” marks the 80th anniversary of the Liberation, featuring stories told by the Next Generation. Guest speakers include the son of a Survivor, the son of a Liberator and a daughter born in a displaced persons camp.

There's also a contest for middle and high school students, which provides an opportunity for reflection and to consider how the Holocaust impacts people today. Students can submit an essay, poem or art on the topics of survival, liberation and renewal. First and second place prizes ($100 and $50, respectively) will be awarded at the middle and high school level for each type of entry, written essay or poem, or art. Entries should be submitted by March 1 to YomHaShoahEssayContest@gmail.com.

"As the daughter of a Holocaust survivor, I believe it’s extremely important to ensure we 'never forget' the atrocities and lessons of the Holocaust, and to engage the younger generation - especially as we have fewer survivors who are alive today," said Rachel Burrows, Howard County Holocaust Remembrance Committee member and second generation daughter of Holocaust child survivor Jacques Fein.
