HARWOOD, MD — Anne Arundel County police shot an armed man Saturday while responding to a domestic violence call in Harwood, officials announced. The first press release said the man died on the scene.

Authorities on Monday identified the deceased as 48-year-old Anthony Hopkins Sr. of Harwood. Officials said the officers involved were:

  • Z. Devers, a 9.5-year veteran
  • K. Slayton, a 9.5-year veteran
  • B. Dehn, a 9-year veteran
  • M. Hanlon, a 3.5-year veteran
  • J. Metcalf, a 5-year veteran who also has 5 years of experience with another law enforcement agency

All five officers are corporals in the Anne Arundel County Police Department's Bureau of Patrol. None of the responding officers were hurt during the encounter, the release said.

Police got multiple calls Saturday around 2:30 a.m. reporting domestic violence at a home in the 4100 block of Sands Road in Harwood, authorities said.

While officers were on the way, a 911 caller alleged that the man involved in the domestic violence incident had left the house and fired several shots outside. Somebody then fired several shots from a wooded area along the driveway as police approached the home, officials said.

The release said some of those shots hit an unoccupied police vehicle.

Authorities said the man came out of the woods several minutes later, still armed with a firearm.

Officials said police ordered the man to drop the gun, but he did not comply.

The release accused the man of raising the gun in the direction of police. Several officers fired at him and hit him multiple times, authorities said.

Officials said police and paramedics gave medical aid, but the man was pronounced dead soon after.

The woman involved in the domestic violence incident went to an unidentified hospital and was later released, authorities said.

Like all fatal officer-involved shootings, this shooting is under investigation by the Independent Investigations Division of Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh's office.

The officers' body-worn cameras were active during the encounter. Investigators usually release this footage within 14 days of a fatal, officer-involved shooting. It could take longer if investigators need more time to finish witness interviews, shield the identities of civilian witnesses shown in the tape or let relatives see the video before it is released publicly.

Officials did not mention if the officers will continue working during the investigation.
