Davidsonville Woman Wins Ms. Maryland Senior America Crown
Mahal Maria May is set to compete for the national crown this fall in Atlantic City.
Mahal Maria May of Davidsonville won the 2012 Ms. Maryland Senior America crown on Monday, becoming the sixth member to receive the honor since 1999.
According to a release from the Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities, May is set to compete for the national title in Atlantic City in October. The local resident will perform a hula dance in an authentic costume for her talent at the competition, according to the release.
The Senior Miss America was created in 1980 to recognize women 60 or older who have reached “the age of elegance,” according to the release.

At the national title event, the 65-year-old Davidsonville woman will show off her talents in addition to participating in an evening gown competition, a private interview with judges and a presentation of her life philosophy, according to the release. May also is very active in the community and an avid volunteer.
“She volunteers for many community projects including ‘Bountiful Backpacks’ with the South Anne Arundel Rotary Club, where each Friday afternoon the neediest children at two elementary schools are sent home with backpacks full of non-perishable food items to sustain the children and their families through the weekend,” according to the release.

May also helps prepare and deliver 125 bag lunches to the Light House Shelter each month, tutors children and foreign language-speaking adults in English, the release reported.
