Late-Inning Heroics Send Seahawks Past Northeast

South River's baseball team (7-2, 4-2) beat Northeast High 3-0 thanks to late-game heroics by Jake Gratz and Austin Wright Thursday afternoon.

What began as a scoreless pitching duel, the game changed when catcher Gratz drove in the go-ahead run to give the Seahawks the lead in the sixth inning.

Connor Cox singled to start the sixth and then advanced to second base on a groundout by Bryan Shores, who has two singles in the game. Then, Northeast intentionally walked Craig Sheridan who previously singled, putting runners on first and second. Later, Gratz came to the plate with the game scoreless with two outs in the sixth inning. Gratz singled, bringing in Cox and Brody Raimondo pinch ran for catcher Gratz.

Austin Wright, who singled in the fifth inning, doubled in the sixth to the right side, driving in Sheridan and pinch runner Raimondo.

Scott Mitchell worked hard for seven innings while throwing from the mound. Mitchell faced a tough bases-loaded situation in the first inning and struck out seven overall, allowing no runs on five hits for a big team win.

South River's varsity softball team didn't fare as well against Northeast High Thursday afternoon, where they lost 14-1. Despite the big loss, they're probably still on a high following their 34-0 victory over Annapolis.

The boys and girls lacrosse teams at South River defeated Chesapeake on Wednesday. The girls won with a resounding 15-1 performance and the boys pulled out a close one with a 9-8 final score.
