EDGEWATER, MD — A Lothian motorcyclist died when police said an SUV turned into the path of the biker Sunday afternoon in Edgewater, according to Anne Arundel County Police.

The fatal crash happened about 1 p.m. on Solomon’s Island Road at Old South River Road South, just south of the South River Bridge in Edgewater.

Police said a 2020 Yamaha motorcycle was northbound on Solomon’s Island Road, approaching Old South River Road South. A 2003 Ford Expedition that was southbound began to turn left onto Old South River Road South when it was struck by the motorcycle.

The driver of the Yamaha — Daniel Joseph Helmly Jr., 19 — was pronounced dead at the scene by Anne Arundel County Emergency Medical Services

Helmly's body was taken to the Medical Examiner's Office in Baltimore for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

The driver and passengers of the Expedition were taken to area hospitals for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Police did not release the name of the SUV driver or list any charges, but said she is a 52-year-old woman from Rockville.
