Multiple Boats Destroyed in Oak Grove Marine Fire

Officials said the fire caused fuel to spill into the South River.

An early morning fire at the Oak Grove Marine Center in Edgewater destroyed three boats and caused some environmental concerns Thursday morning.

The first fire units to arrive to the scene at the 2800 block of Solomons Island Road at 4:40 a.m. on Thursday reported multiple boats at the pier were on fire, according to a press release. In addition to the boats, the pier and items located near the fire were also damaged.

It took 48 firefighters, including two fire boats, about 50 minutes to battle the blaze. Officials said three power boats ranging in size from 30-42 feet in length were destroyed in the fire.

Due to the possible ecological impact from the loss of fuel, the Maryland Department of the Environment was requested to contain and mitigate the fuel spilled into the South River, according to a release.

An exact cause of the fire is still being investigated, and an estimate on the damage is not yet available. No injuries were reported in the fire.
