Viewing Planned for Fallen Navy SEAL in Edgewater

Update (8/30 - 9:40 a.m.)—Efforts by the George P. Kalas Funeral Home to honor Edgewater’s , Patrick Feeks, have been temporarily put on hold, waiting for his family's approval.

A staff member at the funeral home said they've decided to hold off on officially declaring any further memorial plans until the Feeks family gets back in town, and they receive word of approval.

Feeks' viewing is set to take place next week at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home. The 28-year-old Navy SEAL was killed Aug. 16 with seven other Americans and four Afghans when .

Don Rakoskie, a staff member at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, told Patch there will be visitation hours to honor Feeks from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday. The funeral home is still sorting out the details, but Rakoskie also said The Red Cross plans on offering shuttle services to residents hoping to attend the viewings.

“The Red Cross is going to get the parking lot across the street, where the old police station was across the street, and they’re going to run a shuttle service [across Route 2],” Rakoskie said.

He also said the funeral home is expecting hundreds of people to attend the viewing and pay their respects to Feeks.

Feeks’ funeral service is set for Sept. 5 at the Ft. Meyer Memorial Chapel in Arlington, VA. He will be buried at the Arlington National Cemetery. Mary Tarr, a close friend of the Feeks family, told Patch the family is asking residents to donate to the Phoenix Patriot Foundation in lieu of flowers.

Rakoskie said he hopes to plan a special welcoming moment for Feeks when he is transported to the funeral home on Monday at 10 a.m.

“Wouldn’t it be cool if people lined up on Route 2 as their ,” Rakoskie said. "Wouldn’t it be great if we got people out there with a flag."

The funeral home plans to hang its “We Will Never Forget” sign on Labor Day too, as Feeks is brought to Edgewater.
