UPDATE: Witnesses, Police Saw Pedestrian Before Route 2 Fatal Incident

Update (3:15 p.m.)—The pedestrian who was struck and killed by a driver on Solomons Island Road in Harwood was seen walking down the middle of the street by at least three drivers before the , police said.

Police identified the killed pedestrian as Kendrick Lamont Richardson, 37, of no fixed address, according to a press release. 

Additionally, police received a 911 call around 2:30 a.m. Sunday about the man walking down Route 2 and an officer apparently addressed the man, telling him to leave the roadway, police spokesman Justin Mulcahy told The Capital.

TJ Haffelfinger was one of several people who told Patch that he saw the pedestrian walking down Route 2 around 1:15 a.m. Sunday.

“I was doing about 60 mph and I didn’t really see him until he was next to me. He was definitely a person in dark clothes. He was walking in the northbound lane heading south,” Haffelfinger said.

An that the pedestrian “appeared to be obeying the rules of the road,” but Haffelfinger, Matt Phipps and Anthony Dechello each told Patch they saw the man walking in the middle of the road.

“He was walking right down the yellow line. Right in the middle—between both lanes,” Haffelfinger said.

“He was walking straight, he didn’t have a limp, he wasn’t stumbling or nothing—just walking straight,” Phipps told Patch.

Vera Sohovich, the mother of the 20-year-old who turned himself in to police and said he “may have been” the driver who struck the pedestrian, spoke with Patch about her son’s experience on Sunday.

“Stuart thought he struck a deer. A dark object landed on his windshield, smashing it, then flew off. He was traveling at 53 mph,” Vera Sohovich told Patch. “He stopped his car, got out, listened for any noise. He heard nothing. He turned his car around and scanned the field of the equestrian center. Saw nothing.”

It wasn’t until after he learned that police were investigating a dead body on Solomons Island Road that the 20-year-old realized that he “may have been” the driver who struck the man, Vera Sohovich said.

“He went immediately to the south county barracks and told the approaching officers ‘it might have been me. I thought I hit a deer,' ” Vera Sohovich said. “He willingly turned over himself and his vehicle. Nothing was seized or forced from him. He is not a criminal.”

A news release from the Anne Arundel County Police Department on Sunday said officers had not filed any charges against Stuart Sohovich following the incident, but were keeping his car while conducting an investigation.

The news release also stated that the crash involving the pedestrian occurred between 2:30 and 7:30 a.m. Sunday.  

Sohovich, of Edgewater, lost her 23-year-old son, Dan, in June 2011 when he lost control of his convertible and died in a violent car accident.

Following the death of her son in 2011, Sohovich created a memorial sign near the site of Dan’s crash in Edgewater that read, “Stop Distracted Driving. In memory of Dan Sohovich ... No Talking, No Texting, No Speeding.”

She also created a Facebook group to promote safe driving in Dan’s honor. Sohovich said she hopes to speak at schools and raise awareness about the importance of remaining focused while behind the wheel.
