Young Engineers Connect with Brightview Residents After Competition

Young engineers from the Brick Hawks FIRST Lego League robotics team visited residents at Brightview on Friday to talk science, school and their most recent competition.  

The Brick Hawks, a younger version of the competition-winning Power Hawks Robotics team at South River High, design and program Lego robots to complete various tasks according to the contest.

As part of this year’s competition’s theme, “Senior Solutions” to help elderly citizens in their community, the Brick Hawks created and programmed a Lego robot to help move quilts, pick up broken chair pieces, turn on a Lego television and even do some Lego bowling, according to team parent Catherine Gillies.

At their most recent competition, the team took home first place for core values, demonstrating team spirit, cooperation and enthusiasm, she added.

Prior to their competition, the Brick Hawks worked with Brightview residents to help them get on and off the bus easier by creating a mobile step for travelers coming to and from the Edgewater facility.
