Ellicott City Jewelry Store Celebrates 40 Years of Business

St. John's Jewelers will celebrate 40 years of business in Ellicott City this weekend.

The jewelry store is inviting residents to join them for wine, champagne and hor d'oeuvres at the store from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Irwin Farber opened the store in 1973 with his wife, Charlotte. Before that, Farber was a watchmaker in Historic Ellicott City.

The jewelry store's original location was in St. John's Plaza, hence the name, but Farber later moved the store to Route 40, where it stands now.

St. John's is the definition of a family business. Farber's daughter, Linda Miller, started off working in the store cleaning windows. Miller later received a graduate degree in gemology and joined her parents at the store.

"Growing up in the store, I will always remember my parents' strong work ethic and commitment to each customer," said Miller in a statement.

Miller now runs the store with help from her two daughters, who also joined the business.

"Have my daughters work in the store makes me extremely proud and I am thrilled they have taken an interest in the business like I did," said Miller.

Even Irwin, now 90, still helps out in the store, as a self-described, gopher, according to Tracy O'Connor, the store's marketing director. 

In addition to the Saturday celebration, the store is offering a special 40th anniversary sale with up to 50 percent off certain items.
