Essex Library branch manager Robert Maranto said one of the most popular attractions at the library has nothing to do with books or computers.

The large fish tank located by the library’s exit is something that attracts people of all ages, but especially children, Maranto said. The tank holds several tropical saltwater fish – for now.

Budgetary concerns may force the library to get rid of the tank and find a home for the branch’s 10 tropical fish.

It costs about $1,200 a year to care for the fish, which includes maintaining the tank, purchasing supplies and replacing fish that die, Maranto said. The tank has been at the library branch for more than five years.

“We’re in tight budget times and using funds for a fish tank is just not a top priority for the system right now,” Maranto said. “We’d love to find a way to save the tank because it is something unique to our branch and the kids just love it.”

Maranto said the library is looking for donations and/or volunteers who  could assist in care or even donate supplies.

“Everybody at the library would love to keep the tank,” Maranto said. “Right now, we just don’t know if that’s possible.”

Those interested in making a donation or offering their services to care for the fish are asked to contact the Essex Library at 410-887-0295
