City to Celebrate International 'Talk Like a Pirate Day' at Community Museum

International Talk Like a Pirate Day takes place Monday, Sept. 19.

Ahoy, mateys! Stop by t' Museum for a special afternoon o' pirate-y doin’s as the Gaithersburg Community Museum celebrates International Talk Like a Pirate Day on Monday, Sept. 19. What started as some slang between a few racquetball buddies a couple of decades ago has become an international phenomenon. This year, the pirate ship stops at the Gaithersburg Community Museum, where kids of all ages can imagine themselves sailing the high seas, right alongside the railroad tracks in Olde Towne Gaithersburg.

The fun takes place 3-6 p.m. Visitors can take “pirate talk” lessons and make eye patches and hooks. Author Mary Quattlebaum reads from her book, Pirate vs. Pirate at 4 p.m. At 5 p.m., Steve Buckley will be reading his book, Blackbear the Pirate. While admission is free, those who preregister via (301) 258-6160 will receive a free copy of Buckley’s book. This activity is sponsored in part by the Maryland State Arts Council.

The Gaithersburg Community Museum is located at 9 South Summit Ave. Regular museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with additional hours by appointment. Museum admission is free. This unique facility is also available to rent for business meetings and social occasions.
